Greenwich Park is one of the largest single green spaces in south-east London and a former hunting park that has welcomed visitors for hundreds of years, from ancient Romans and Anglo-Saxons to Tudor monarchs and Victorian sailors. The world-famous Royal Observatory is located in the middle of the park, where the Greenwich Prime Meridian begins. The park contains historic tree avenues, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery, and a Roman Temple that stood there between approximately AD 100–400.
